Six delicious red wines including two of our ‘Best of the Best’ bottles. Two sumptuous French reds, A tantalising Italian Puglia Rosso, An Argentinian malbec, and a selection of South African delights.
First up the indomitable ‘Edizione Cinque Autoctoni 20 – 2018’ from Fantini. Now in its 20th year of production this excellent Italian red is going from strength to strength. Rated 99/100 by Luca Maroni for a third year in a row is quite the achievement. A deep ruby red wine with blackberry and cherry and an herbaceous minerality which is alluring as you sip, elements of cinnamon and cocoa help to round out the distinctive flavour. Velvety tannins are complemented by the savoury sweetness of the French oak all wine leaves a long smooth fruity finish with elegant mouth feel.
The next bottle we must talk about is the ‘Fenix Dombeya - 2017’, all the way from Haskell Vineyards in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Smooth and refined with bold flavours of rich fresh fruits and rose to a more serious tobacco, dark plum and blackcurrant leaf that lingers favourably in the aftertaste. A perfect red wine which pairs beautifully with Lamb, Beef and Red Meats as well as going beautifully with your after-dinner cheeses. Haskell wines are notoriously rare in the UK, and we believe we are possibly the only UK retailer to be selling this sensational wine this Christmas!
‘Otello Malbec – 2020’ The previous vintage (2019) was one of Christmas 2020s dark horses which quickly became a Craft’d Favourite. This fruity, brambly and supple wine, which is a distinctly Argentinian Malbec will impress with generous lashing of plum, blackberry and hints of vanilla spice. Delicious to enjoy with a meal or on its own.
'Running Duck Shiraz – 2019’ this delicious Shiraz from South Africa is sure to slide down all too easily. Organic and Fairtrade. This wine has a rich dark colour with a smoky and vanilla nose. Dark fruit on the palate gives the wine an all-round juiciness. Oaky tannins impart a spicy finish with good structure. Did you know that Shiraz and Syrah are actually the same grape variety? Syrah is generally from Europe and Shiraz from New World wine regions.
'Chateau Lepine, Merlot - 2016' is easy drinking claret, unoaked with lots of fruity flavours and texture, without being overpowering. Wine of dark garnet color with purple reflections. The aroma and taste are dominated by ripe black currants and plums. The wine has a fine tannin and a pleasant velvety finish. Chateau Lepine is the original name of Chateau du Cros, which is owned by the Boyer family. The average age of the vines is over 40 years old and the grapes are grown on the hilly slopes on the right bank of the Garonne river some 25 miles South of Bordeaux.
The final bottle in our set is a true easy drinking champion which pairs beautifully with a range of foods, The ‘Le Versant Pinot Noir – 2019’ is a wine with a Delicate colour with garnet tones. On the nose, aromas of cherry, wild strawberries and fresh blackcurrant. Elegant and smooth palate with fruity, smoky and minty hints. Great when enjoyed with cooked meats, anything which is smoked, charcuterie and cheeses.
